Instructions for Authors

Journal of surgery and trauma welcomes articles on all aspects of Trauma and surgery practice, research, education, and policy.  All manuscripts are subject to review by the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Invited Reviewers, and a Statistician when appropriate. Acceptance is based on the originality, significance, and validity of the material presented. The most appropriate subject category should be selected when submitting your paper online.
Before submitting your manuscript, please insure that you have carefully considered the following points:


The manuscript should include:
1) Title page (Include complete title of manuscript, authors ‘name and affiliations, Orcid ID for all authors, and address for correspondence with telephone numbers, e-mail, and Fax number.
2) Abstract (up to 300 words subdivided into Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion)
3) Keywords (minimum 3 and maximum 5 words. Keywords will assist indexers in cross-indexing the article as they are published with the abstract. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list of Index Medicus (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh)).
4) Main text including:  a) Introduction, b) Methods, c) Results, d) Discussion, e) Conclusion
5) Declarations:
All manuscripts must contain the following sections under the heading 'Declarations':

  • Ethics approval and consent to participate
  • Consent for publication
  • Data Availability Statement
  • Funding Statement
  • Acknowledgements
  • Authors' contributions
  • Conflict of Interest
  • Declaration of generative AI in scientific writing
Please see below for details on the information to be included in these sections.
If any of the sections are not relevant to your manuscript, please include the heading and write 'Not applicable' for that section.

Ethics approval and consent to participate
Manuscripts reporting studies involving human participants, human data or human tissue must:
  • include a statement on ethics approval and consent (even where the need for approval was waived)
  • include the name of the ethics committee that approved the study and the committee’s reference number if appropriate
Studies involving animals must include a statement on ethics approval and for experimental studies involving client-owned animals, authors must also include a statement on informed consent from the client or owner.
If your manuscript does not report on or involve the use of any animal or human data or tissue, please state “Not applicable” in this section.

Consent for publication
If your manuscript contains any individual person’s data in any form (including any individual details, images or videos), consent for publication must be obtained from that person, or in the case of children, their parent or legal guardian. All presentations of case reports must have consent for publication.
If your manuscript does not contain data from any individual person, please state “Not applicable” in this section.

Data Availability Statement
All manuscripts must include an ‘Availability of data and materials’ statement. Data availability statements can take one of the following form (or a combination of more than one if required for multiple datasets):
  • The datasets generated and/or analysed during the current study are available in the [NAME] repository, [PERSISTENT WEB LINK TO DATASETS]
  • The datasets used and/or analysed during the current study are available from the corresponding author on reasonable request.
  • All data generated or analysed during this study are included in this published article [and its supplementary information files].
  • The datasets generated and/or analysed during the current study are not publicly available due [REASON WHY DATA ARE NOT PUBLIC] but are available from the corresponding author on reasonable request.
  • Data sharing is not applicable to this article as no datasets were generated or analysed during the current study.
  • The data that support the findings of this study are available from [third party name] but restrictions apply to the availability of these data, which were used under license for the current study, and so are not publicly available. Data are however available from the authors upon reasonable request and with permission of [third party name].
  • Not applicable. If your manuscript does not contain any data, please state 'Not applicable' in this section.

Funding Statement
All sources of funding for the research reported should be declared. If the funder has a specific role in the conceptualization, design, data collection, analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript, this should be declared.

Acknowledgements
Please acknowledge anyone who contributed towards the article who does not meet the criteria for authorship including anyone who provided professional writing services or materials. Authors should obtain permission to acknowledge from all those mentioned in the Acknowledgements section.

Authors' contributions

Journal of Surgery and Trauma adheres to the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals issued by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) According to these guidelines, authorship should be based on all four of the following criteria:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work, or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data.

  • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content.

  • Final approval of the version to be published.

  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work, ensuring that questions related to accuracy or integrity are properly investigated and resolved.

The individual contributions of authors to the manuscript should be specified in this section. Please use initials to refer to each author's contribution in this section, for example: "GT analyzed and interpreted the patient data regarding the hematological disease and the transplant. MA performed the histological examination of the kidney, and was a major contributor in writing the manuscript. All authors read and approved the final manuscript."


Conflict of Interest
All financial and non-financial competing interests must be declared in this section. Please use the authors initials to refer to each authors' competing interests in this section. If you do not have any competing interests, please state "The authors declare that they have no competing interests" in this section.

Declaration of generative AI in scientific writing
Authors could use AI in writing of the manuscript to improve the language and readability, to produce images of the paper, or in the collection and analysis of data. Authors are required to disclose any utilization of AI tools (how and which AI tools have been used) at the end of the manuscript. It is essential that the authors thoroughly review the final content, and they are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript.
Example: We acknowledge the use of [AI tool name] to [write the introduction section] OR We have not used any AI tools or technologies to prepare this manuscript.


6) References (References should be given in the Vancouver style and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Citation in the text should be in line with text in parentheses with numbering style. The titles of the journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in the list of Journals Indexed in MEDLINE.)

 The journal publishes the following types of papers:
Original articles: Text should be up to 8000 words; A structured abstract should be 300 words; maximum number of tables/figures should not be more than 6; maximum number of references should not be more than 40. 
Case reports: Text should be up to 4000 words; A abstract should be 100 words; Maximum number tables/figures should not be more than 3; Maximum number of references should not be more than 20. 
Short communication: Text should be up to 4000 words; A structured abstract should be 200 words; Maximum number tables/figures should not be more than 3; Maximum number of references should not be more than 20. 
Letter to Editor: Text should be up to 1000 words; Maximum number of references shouldn’t be more than 15. 
Meta-Analysis & Review articles: Text should be up to 7000 words; A structured or unstructured abstract should be 250 words; Maximum number of tables/figures shouldn’t be more than 8; Maximum number of references shouldn’t be more than 90. 
Study protocol: Text should be up to 8000 words; A structured abstract should be 300 words; maximum number of tables/figures should not be more than 6; maximum number of references should not be more than 40. 

Proofreading: A computer printout is sent to the corresponding author for proofreading before publication in order to avoid any mistakes. Corrections should be marked clearly and sent immediately to the Journal office.

Abbreviations and symbols: Use only standard abbre­viations. Avoid using them in the title and ab­stract. The full term for which abbre­viation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a stan­dard unit of measurement.

You can tribute, transmit, display, or publish any materials contained in the Journal without the prior written permission of it or the appropriate copyright owner. (Open Access agreement).


publica­tion charges: There are no charges for publica­tion in this Journal.

Peer review process: All manuscripts are considered to be confidential. They are peer-reviewed by at least 3 anonymous reviewers selected by the Editorial Board. The corresponding author is notified as soon as possible of the editor's decision to accept, reject, or require modifications. If the manuscript is completely acceptable according to the criteria set forth in these instructions, it is scheduled for the next available issue.
 

Plagiarism: Journal of surgery and Trauma is committed to publishing the original studies and timely reviews that have neither been published nor are under review elsewhere. J Surg Trauma is powered by CrossCheck™, iThenticate™, and all the submitted manuscripts are subjected to the CrossCheck. Taking all plagiarized materials will incur the “Plagiarism Sanctions”. Submitted manuscripts, which are found to be published or under review elsewhere, will be sustained and experience the “Duplicated Publication Sanctions”. Submitted Manuscripts that are found to include either fabricated or falsified data, including the manipulation of images, will confront the “Data Fabrication/Falsification Sanctions”.

Retraction: Based on the COPE guidelines, will consider retracting a publication if:
  • It has clear evidence that the findings are unreliable, either as a result of misconduct (e.g. data fabrication) or honest error (e.g. miscalculation or experimental error).
  • The findings have previously been published elsewhere without proper cross-referencing, permission, or justification (i.e. cases of redundant publication) 
  • It constitutes plagiarism.
  • It reports unethical research.

We expect authors to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

  2. Abstract in Structured format up to 300 words.

  3. References are mentioned as stated in the Instruction to Authors section.

  4. Tables should be typed on separate pages.

  5. Make sure for Headings of Tables, their numbers, and Captions of illustrations. Don’t repeat the information in tables if it is covered in the text.

  6. Photographs/illustrations along with their captions.

  7. Manuscript in Triplicate

  8. Letter of Undertaking signed by all the authors.

  9. Disclosure regarding the source of funding and conflict of interest if any besides approval of the study from the respective Ethics Committee/Institution Review Board.
